Ligaments and Tendons
Ligaments and tendons are bands of tissue connecting bones to other bones, muscles and organs. They provide stability and flexibility to the body, and are essential for movement. Tendons are thicker and stronger than ligaments, and are made of collagen, while ligaments are made of a combination of elastic and collagen fibers enabling them to stretch and recoil. They act like shock absorbers and store energy as they enable the body to move through a full range of motion. Injuries to ligaments and tendons, especially due to overuse, are common for athletes and active individuals, and can lead to serious problems that can affect daily activities. Treatment for such injuries often involves physical therapy and exercises to strengthen the muscles and ligaments. Prevention is key to avoiding such injuries, and can include stretching, strengthening, and proper warm-up. With proper care and attention, ligaments and tendons are essential for movement and flexibility.
