Isotonic

solution An isotonic solution is a solution with a concentration of solutes that is equal to the concentration of another solution. It is important because it enables the cells to maintain the same osmotic pressure as the solution outside of the cells. Isotonic solutions are typically used in the medical field to treat dehydration or to administer medication. They can also be used to treat athletes who have overexerted themselves; the solution will help to rehydrate the person quickly. Additionally, isotonic solutions are used to preserve organs before transplantation and as a supplement for intravenous feeding.
