Collagens

Collagens are the most abundant proteins in the human body, composed of three polypeptide chains arranged in a triple helix structural motif. They are an important component of all human tissues, providing structure and strength, particularly in connective tissues such as skin, bones and tendons. Collagens can also act as a reservoir for hormones, enzymes, and other molecules important for physiological processes. Different types of collagen are present in different tissues, and therefore play important roles in the body depending on the tissue type. In skin, for example, collagen contributes to skin elasticity and wrinkle formation. Collagens are also used therapeutically in wound-healing as well as for cosmetic purposes.
