Clostridium Botulinum
Clostridium botulinum is a rod-shaped bacteria which produces a neurotoxin known as botulin, the most potent toxin known to humans. This bacterium is found in soil, dust, and water, and can be found in improperly canned foods. Botulin is used for medical and cosmetic purposes, as it acts as a muscle relaxant, and can be used to treat certain muscle conditions and wrinkles. When ingested, it can cause a serious disease known as botulism, which can be fatal. Proper food storage and handling is essential to reduce the risk of exposure to the bacteria and its toxin.
