Ataxia
Ataxia is a neurological condition that affects the coordination and control of voluntary movements, including the limbs and movements of speech. It is caused by a breakdown or impairment of a person’s nervous system, usually due to a stroke, head trauma, or degenerative diseases such as Multiple Sclerosis. Ataxia can have far-reaching effects on a person’s physical, cognitive, and psychosocial functioning, but can be managed with a combination of therapies and lifestyle modifications. Physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, and nutritional therapy can all be utilized to help improve coordination, balance, and mobility. In addition, support groups and counseling can help to improve the quality of life for those with ataxia.
