Subdural Empyema
Subdural empyema is a serious condition that occurs when pus accumulates in the subdural space between the dura mater (the outermost membrane of the brain) and the arachnoid mater (the middle membrane of the meninges). Subdural empyema is a rare occurrence and is most often associated with infections such as sinusitis, mastoiditis, otitis media and meningitis. It can also be caused by trauma, skull fractures, penetration of a foreign body, or a complication of neurosurgery. Subdural empyema can be life-threatening and if left untreated can lead to significant neurological damage or even death. Treatment typically entails the drainage of pus and long-term antibiotic therapy. Imaging studies are crucial in the diagnosis and monitoring of progression of the disease. Early diagnosis and prompt treatment of subdural empyema is critical to achieve a positive outcome.
