Obsessive-compulsive Disorder
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a mental health disorder characterized by intrusive thoughts and compulsive behaviors that cause significant distress and impair daily functioning. It is a common illness, with 2.3% of the population suffering from it in any given year. Individuals with OCD experience undesired and often irrational thoughts that they are unable to control, and they perform repetitive tasks (compulsions) in attempts to reduce stress and anxiety. Treatment options include cognitive behavioral therapy and medications such as serotonin reuptake inhibitors and antipsychotic drugs. OCD can have a profound effect on one's life, so effective management of this disorder is crucial for individuals to lead healthy and productive lives.
