Upper Respiratory Tract Infections
Upper respiratory tract infections (URTIs) are a group of infections that can affect the sinuses, throat and airways. They are usually caused by viruses and can range from mild to very severe. Symptoms may include sore throat, runny nose, congestion, and headache. In some cases, bacteria may be responsible for the infection. Treatment for URTIs can include antihistamines, decongestants and antibiotics for bacterial infections. URTIs are very common and are often self-limiting, which means the body is able to fight off the infection on its own. It is important to seek medical help, however, if symptoms persist, as some bacterial infections can cause long-term complications.
