Tuberculosis Drug Discovery
Tuberculosis (TB) is a serious infectious disease caused by the bacterium Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Drug discovery for TB is an important step in combating the spread of the disease. The process includes the identification of compounds that can specifically target the bacteria responsible for the disease, allowing for effective and safe treatments. New compounds are discovered through chemical screening of existing compounds, natural products, and compounds from synthetic sources. The compounds that show promise as potential drug candidates are then tested for safety and effectiveness in the laboratory and then in clinical trials before use in the treatment of TB. This process is essential for the development of safe and effective drugs to reduce the prevalence of TB and improve the health of affected populations around the world.
