Sleep Disorders & Asthma
Sleep disorders and asthma are increasingly recognized as interrelated health issues. Recent studies suggest that certain sleep disorders, such as obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), may have a direct impact on the severity and nature of asthma in many individuals. Evidence suggests that OSA can worsen asthma, worsen response to medications and even increase the risk of developing asthma. On the other hand, successful treatment of OSA has been found to reduce asthma symptoms and even improve response to asthma medications. Treating sleep disorders and optimizing sleep quality may therefore be an important part of managing asthma. Understanding the connections between sleep disorders and asthma can help those with either condition improve management of their condition and reduce their risk of developing the other.
