Respiratory Tract Infections
Respiratory tract infection (RTI) is a broad term to describe a wide range of illnesses caused by various microbes, such as viruses, bacteria, and fungi. Common RTIs include the common cold, flu, sinusitis, and pneumonia. RTIs can affect any part of the upper and lower airways, from the nose to the lungs. These infections cause inflammation, irritation and discomfort in the respiratory tract and can be very serious, even life-threatening in some cases. The best way to prevent an RTI is to practice good respiratory hygiene, such as avoiding contact with those who are already infected, washing hands frequently, and getting the influenza vaccine. When RTIs do occur, the key is quick diagnosis and treatment with appropriate antibiotics, antivirals and anti-inflammatory medications. This is especially important for children, the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems. Early diagnosis often leads to better outcomes and quicker recovery.
