Nasal Concha

Nasal concha, or turbinate bones, are bony structures located in the nasal cavity of many vertebrates. They aid in the filtration, humidification, and warming of inspired air before it is sent down the respiratory tract. Nasal concha also increase the internal surface area of the nasal cavity and can be involved in the regulation of breathing. Abnormalities of the nasal concha can lead to difficulty breathing and can cause various nose and sinus symptoms such as runny nose, congestion, headaches, and sinus infections. Treatment for nasal concha abnormalities often involves medications and/or surgery.
