Lymphangioleimyomatosis
Lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM) is a rare lung disease that affects women of reproductive age. It causes abnormal growth of smooth muscle cells in the lungs and in other organs, leading to problems breathing, recurrent pneumothorax, and cystic lung destruction. Its cause is unknown, but it is believed to be caused by abnormal growth and spread of smooth muscle cells in the lungs. LAM can also affect other organs such as the kidneys, lymph nodes, and heart, and can lead to problems with fertility and other health issues. Treatment for LAM typically includes medications to reduce the growth of smooth muscle cells and to improve breathing, as well as lung transplant if necessary. Early diagnosis is important for successful treatment and for determining prognosis.
