Radiation Nephritis
Radiation nephritis is a form of kidney damage caused by radiation treatment of cancer or other medical conditions. It is characterized by inflammation, scarring, and narrowing of the kidneys’ small blood vessels, leading to impaired kidney function. Symptoms vary depending on the extent of kidney damage, but may include hypertension, proteinuria, edema, and renal insufficiency. Radiation nephritis is an uncommon but serious sequela of radiation therapy, and early diagnosis and management are essential for improving patient prognosis. Treatment is tailored to the individual’s symptoms and may include medications, diet and lifestyle adjustments, or even kidney transplantation. With appropriate treatment, many patients can enjoy improved kidney function.
