Nick Translation
Nick translation is a process that is utilized in molecular biology to create single-stranded DNA molecules from double-stranded DNA. This process is achieved by introducing nicks or breaks in the hydrogen bonds between the two strands of the double helix. Nick translation involves the action of a DNA polymerase enzyme that serves to repair the nicks and fill in the missing nucleotide bases. The process is often used in the production of recombinant DNA for projects such as gene cloning, DNA sequencing, and mutagenesis. Through Nick translation, scientists are able to make precise changes to the genetic code of a cell that can be used for a range of applications in the fields of biochemistry, genetics, and medicine.
