Physiological Stress Response
The physiological stress response is the body’s natural reaction to stressors in the environment. It is an automatic and instinctive response to stimuli that may be physical, mental, or emotional in nature. It involves the activation of the autonomic nervous system, which releases hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline into the bloodstream. These hormones heighten the body’s alertness level, speed up heart rate, and increase the strength of skeletal muscles, allowing the body to fight or flight. This response is important for survival and adaptation, enabling people to respond to stressful situations quickly and effectively. This response is also linked to many chronic diseases and mental health issues, making it an important research tool for better understanding and treating these conditions.
