Substance Use Disorders
Substance use disorders refer to a group of mental health conditions where a person’s use of alcohol, drugs or other substances is problematic and causes significant distress or impairment. Substance use disorders can range in severity from mild to severe, and may include physical dependence and/or addiction. Substance use disorders have a significant impact on the individual, their family, and the wider community. Early detection, prevention, and evidence-based treatments are essential for reducing the burden of substance use disorders. Treatment typically involves a combination of counseling, lifestyle changes, and medication. Treatment goals include reducing or eliminating substance use and preventing relapse.
