Obsessive-compulsive Disorder
Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a mental disorder characterized by intrusive thoughts known as obsessions and repetitive behaviours known as compulsions that interfere with daily activities. It affects people of all ages and is estimated to affect 2-3% of the population. It is treated with psychotherapy, medication, or both. Psychotherapy helps sufferers understand the origin of their thoughts and behaviours, and to learn how to manage them. Medication helps to reduce the severity of symptoms and allows sufferers to engage better with therapy. OCD can significantly interfere with quality of life, but with appropriate treatment and support, it is possible to lead a meaningful and productive life.
