Medical Genetics
Medical Genetics is a field of medicine that focuses on the role of genetics in health and disease. It is concerned with genetic testing, genetic counselling, pre- and post-natal diagnosis and screening, genetic research and counselling services, and ethical issues related to these activities. Medical Genetics is significant in that it seeks to understand the genetic basis of illness and to develop treatments and preventive strategies. It is used in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of numerous genetic diseases, as well as to screen for rare inherited conditions. Diagnostic genetic testing is used to identify genetic conditions and to detect variations in genes that may increase the risk of disease. Genetic counselling helps to explain the implications of genetic testing and potential preventive measures. It also provides guidance for families with a history of inherited conditions.
