Long Non-Coding Rnas
Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) are molecules composed of nucleic acids that are longer than 200 nucleotides. They are transcribed from DNA, but unlike other types of RNA, lncRNAs do not code for proteins. They can be found in the genomes of all eukaryotic organisms, and have a wide variety of roles in many biological processes. LncRNAs are important for regulating gene expression by recruiting other proteins to certain locations in the genome, or by forming complexes that are necessary for DNA organization and function. They have been linked to cancer, immune response, and even aging. The study of lncRNAs has opened up possibilities for the development of treatments and diagnostics for various diseases.
