Genetics

Genetics is the branch of science that studies how inherited traits are passed from one generation to the next. It is the science of genetic variation and the mechanisms of inheritance in living organisms. Genetics has major implications in understanding the causes of diseases, in the selection of agriculturally beneficial organisms, and in the development of new treatments for medical conditions. Genetics plays a vital role in many aspects of life, from health and development to the evolution of species. By understanding the genetic basis of inherited traits and the underlying DNA structure, scientists can use this knowledge to select specific traits for the development of better crops and livestock, to increase the odds of successful gene therapy treatments and to learn more about the past and current impacts of human behavior on populations.
