Sumatran Orangutans

Sumatran Orangutans (Pongo abelii) are one of the four species of orangutans, and are found exclusively on the island of Sumatra, Indonesia. They are critically endangered, with their population declining rapidly due to habitat destruction from the palm oil industry and forest fires. They are the largest arboreal mammal and have unique adaptations for their life in the rainforest canopy, such as long arms that allow them to swing from tree to tree. Sumatran Orangutans are also highly intelligent animals and can be observed engaging in tool use and even teaching behaviors. Conservation efforts to save this species, such as habitat protection and rehabilitation, are essential to ensure their survival.
