Primate Communication and Language
Primate communication and language refers to the study of primates’ use of expressive behavior and language to communicate. Primates communicate through a variety of vocalizations, facial expressions, and gestures. While research suggested that primates are not able to utilize a true language system for communication, recent research has revealed some unexpected results that demonstrate a capacity for the use of symbols and the ability to communicate more complex ideas than previously thought. Primate communication and language studies provide important insights into the evolution of human communication, allowing us to better understand the origins of language. Additionally, these studies can contribute to the development of methods for improving communication between humans and primates as well as among primates.
