Pongo

pygmaeus Pongo pygmaeus, also known as the Bornean Orangutan, is an endangered great ape species native to the rainforests of Borneo, Indonesia and Malaysia. This primate is the largest species of tree-dwelling mammal and is one of the most intelligent and arboreal of all the primates. Orangutans are herbivorous, typically feeding on fruits, leaves, and bark. They are essential to their local eco-systems by helping to disperse seeds and shape their environment. Bornean orangutans also play a key role in a variety of studies that focus on the evolution of human behavior and cognition. Therefore, the protection and conservation of Pongo pygmaeus is essential to the survival of many other species, as well as to the continued understanding of our own evolution.
