Pan Troglodytes
Pan troglodytes, also known as the Common Chimpanzee, is a species of great ape found in the forests of equatorial Africa. They are the most intelligent of the African apes and have been the subject of many studies into their behavior, cognition, and genetics. Chimpanzees are of great significance to humans due to their close phylogenetic relationship as well as their unique physical and behavioral traits. Their advanced cognition and use of tools, along with their social behavior and structures, have enabled scientists to gain many insights into the evolution of humans and our closest relatives. For these reasons, the study of chimpanzees offers numerous opportunities for research, conservation, and education.
