Atelinae
Atelinae is a subfamily of primates, one of the four subfamilies of the family Callitrichidae. It contains two genera, the Ateles (spider monkeys) and the Brachyteles (woolly spider monkeys). Atelinae is an important taxon in primate taxonomy as it is a distinct subfamily with few extinct species surviving. Spider monkeys inhabit tropical forests in Central and South America and are highly adapted to arboreal life. They are diurnal, quadrupedal, and have a long tail used as a fifth limb for balance and support. They are social animals, living in groups with complex social hierarchies, and are known for their remarkable intelligence and problem-solving abilities. Atelinae has been studied extensively to better understand primate behavior, ecology, and evolution. They have also been the focus of research on conservation efforts aimed at protecting their habitats and populations. The conservation actions that have been taken to protect these primates have been successful, and have helped to conserve the biodiversity of tropical forests.
