Polysaccharides
Polysaccharides are long chain carbohydrates made up of repeating monosaccharide units. They are found in a wide range of natural sources including plants and animals and are used for a variety of purposes. In animals, they are the main form of dietary energy; in plants, they act as structural elements, providing rigidity and helping to store energy. Polysaccharides are also often used in food production as thickeners, stabilizers and texturizers. They are also used in the production of biodegradable plastics, pharmaceuticals and adhesives. The importance of polysaccharides lies in their ability to store and transport energy, provide structure and support for living organisms, and act as protective barriers for cells and tissues.
