Polymerization Mechanism

Polymerization is a chemical process in which small molecules known as monomers are linked together to form macromolecules known as polymers. This reaction is important in the production of a wide variety of synthetic materials and products, such as plastics, rubber, fabrics, and adhesives. The main benefit of polymerization is that it allows the synthesis of long, linear molecules with precisely controlled properties. By controlling the properties of these molecules, products with improved performance characteristics can be formulated, such as materials that are stronger, stiffer, or more resistant to heat or chemicals. Polymerization also enables the production of materials that are lightweight and have excellent electrical, optical, and thermal properties.
