Optical Activity
Optical activity is a physical phenomenon in which certain molecules rotate the plane of polarization of light that passes through them. This phenomenon is significant because it provides a method to determine the chirality (which is either right or left-handedness) of the molecule, which is an important factor in the development of drugs and other molecules with specific applications. Optical activity is used in a variety of fields, from the characterization of biomolecules in chemistry and biochemistry, to identifying the enantiomers and chiral dyes used in the production of stereoisomers. Additionally, optical activity can be used to assess air and water quality, as well as to measure the optical properties of materials.
