Protoplasts
Protoplasts are plant cells that are stripped of their cell wall, either chemically or through mechanical treatments. They are very important to the scientific study of plant cells and crops for genetic improvement, as the manipulation and transformation of plant protoplasts are easier than manipulating the whole cell with its wall. Protoplasts, therefore, play an important role in biotechnology, allowing scientists to quickly and easily manipulate the genetic content of plants, with the potential to develop new varieties with enhanced traits. This could provide greater yields and increased crop quality, helping to feed a growing population.
