Plants

Plants are living organisms that form a major part of every terrestrial ecosystem. They feed off of the energy in sunlight and synthesize their own food through a process called photosynthesis. Their presence is essential in the environment because they are producers that turn carbon dioxide into oxygen and, in doing so, support the atmospheric balance. Plants also provide food, shade, and protection to various animal species and humans alike. They are excellent sources of natural resources that can be used for fuel, medicines, clothing, and food, among other items. By studying plants we can gain insight into the development of important farming and horticultural techniques. Plants also play a significant role in the biotechnology industry and in the production of new drugs, bioplastics, and biofuels.
