Plant Respiration
Plant respiration is a process essential to the survival of all plants, in which they take in oxygen (O2) and convert it into energy. Oxygen is used by the plants to break down sugars and carbohydrates in the form of glucose (C6H12O6). This produces energy, which is then used to power their growth and development. Plant respiration also produces carbon dioxide (CO2) as a by-product that is released back into the atmosphere. By doing this, plants are an important part of the global carbon cycle, helping to keep the balance of carbon dioxide in our environment.
