Plant Pests
Plant pests are animals or microorganisms that can damage or destroy plants and reduce the yield of crops. They can cause physical damage to crops, transmit diseases, reduce the nutritional quality of the crop, and act as vectors for plant viruses. Good integrated pest management (IPM) programs are essential for successful crop production and to ensure efficient use of resources. IPM involves the use of a variety of control methods to reduce pest populations, including biological control agents, cultural practices, host-plant resistance, and chemical control measures. Effective pest management helps farmers minimize crop losses, increase yields and profits, reduce environmental and human health risks, and conserve resources.
