Plant-Herbivore Interactions

Plant-Herbivore Interactions are an important and long-standing relationship in ecology and evolutionary biology. Herbivory, or the consumption of plants by animal consumers, is ubiquitous in terrestrial ecosystems and has a major influence on the structure and dynamics of ecosystems. Herbivores interact with plants to shape the vegetation of many habitats throughout the world. These interactions determine which species can survive in a given area, how ecosystems can remain productive, and the genetic diversity of plant populations. Additionally, plant-herbivore interactions can shape the evolutionary relationships between plants and their herbivores, leading to an evolutionary arms race. The study of plant-herbivore interactions are therefore essential for understanding how species interact in an ecosystem and how this influences the structure and dynamics of the habitat.
