Peptidoglycan
Peptidoglycan is a structural molecule found in the cell walls of bacteria, which gives them their characteristic shape and allows them to maintain their cell wall integrity. It is composed of cross-linked peptides and sugars, and is responsible for preventing osmotic lysis and regulating the entry and exit of solutes. Peptidoglycan is essential for bacterial survival and virulence, and it is used both in medical and industrial applications, such as the production of antibiotics, food fermentation, soil improvement, and bioremediation.
