Threats to Biodiversity

Biodiversity, or the variety of life found on Earth, is under threat from human activities such as habitat loss, over exploitation, pollution and climate change. Biodiversity is essential to maintain a healthy environment and safeguard human health, providing numerous socio-economic benefits such as food, fuel, clean air and water, and the regulation of ecosystems such as water catchments, soil fertility and climate. Biodiversity also provides spiritual, educational and recreational benefits, creating a sense of place and providing cultural and historical significance. Loss of biodiversity can have profound impacts on ecosystems and their ability to provide goods and services to people. Therefore, it is essential that the threats to biodiversity are recognised and addressed in order to ensure a healthy future for all.
