Herbivory

Herbivory is the process of a living organism consuming parts of plants to obtain their energy and nutrition. It can vary from the nibbling of leaves and flowers to the consumption of the entire plant. Herbivory is an important process in ecosystems, as it helps keep the population of plants in check, allowing other species to gain access to resources. It also plays an essential role in the global carbon cycle and is an important component of the phosphorus cycle. The grazing of animals can lead to increased diversity of plant species and help prevent the spread of invasive species. Herbivory can also create opportunities for other species to colonize a given area. Finally, the process of herbivory helps break down the dead plant material, making it available for other organisms to feed on, thus contributing to the overall nutrient cycle in an ecosystem.
