Biodiversity and Food Security
Biodiversity and food security are closely linked since a diverse range of species provides for more robust food production systems. The presence of multiple species of plants and animals helps to protect against pests and diseases, helping to ensure a more reliable and more consistent food supply. The use of a variety of crop species, livestock breeds, and other organisms also helps to maintain soil fertility and reduce water contamination, two key factors for sustainable and productive food production. Furthermore, increased biodiversity also strengthens food security by providing alternative sources of nutrition, increasing access to essential micronutrients and healthy calories. By conserving biodiversity, we are also able to maintain ecosystem services related to food production, including pollination, pest and disease control, and water and nutrient cycling.
