Trypanosomiasis
Trypanosomiasis, also referred to as African Sleeping Sickness, is a vector-borne disease caused by a parasitic protozoan. This dangerous disease is spread by the bite of an infected tsetse fly and is endemic throughout many African countries. Symptoms of trypanosomiasis include flu-like signs such as fever, headaches, and joint aches, as well as neurological problems including confusion, coma, and paralysis. Left untreated, this disease can be fatal. Early diagnosis is critical for its successful treatment. Thankfully, the continued research into the disease is allowed for improvements in detection techniques and the development of effective treatments to control the spread of trypanosomiasis.
