Trichomoniasis
Trichomoniasis is a sexually-transmitted infection caused by a single-celled parasite, Trichomonas vaginalis. Symptoms can include itching, burning, and pain in the genital area, although in some cases, people may be asymptomatic. The infection can be easily treated with antibiotics, but if left untreated, it can lead to serious health problems. Trichomoniasis is especially important to recognize and treat because it can increase a person’s risk of contracting HIV and other sexually-transmitted infections. It is also associated with a higher risk of cervical cancer in women. Such information emphasizes the need for regular testing and early treatment to reduce the burden of this disease in the population.
