Treponematoses
Treponematoses are a group of infectious diseases caused by the Treponema bacteria, including syphilis, yaws, and pinta. These diseases are primarily transmitted through direct contact with an infected person's skin and mucous membranes. They can also be transmitted through sexual contact, or from mother to infant during childbirth. The signs and symptoms of these diseases vary depending on the type, but can include skin lesions, joint pain, anemia, fatigue, and neurological problems. Treponematoses can be treated with antibiotics, but late-stage syphilis and yaws can cause permanent damage if left untreated. Improving access to diagnosis and treatment is key to reducing the global burden of these diseases.
