Tick-Borne Encephalitis

Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) is a viral infection that is spread through the bite of an infected tick. The disease can cause inflammation of the brain (encephalitis), resulting in fever, headache, vomiting, seizures and in severe cases, neurological damage and even death. TBE is a serious public health problem in Europe, parts of Asia, and North America and is an important cause of travel-related illness. Vaccination can be effective in preventing the disease. Early recognition, prompt treatment and appropriate supportive care can reduce the risk of serious complications and death.
