Serratia Marcescens

Serratia marcescens is a Gram-negative, rod-shaped bacterium that is commonly found in the environment and has a wide range of possible habitats. It is a common cause of healthcare-associated infections such as pneumonia, bloodstream infections, wound infections and urinary tract infections. Its ability to form biofilms, produce and resist antibiotics, and survive in a variety of environmental conditions, makes it a potential major public health problem. Treatment of S. marcescens infections is complicated and usually requires a combination of antibiotics and supportive care. Research is ongoing to better understand S. marcescens and to develop new treatments and prevention strategies.
