Plasmodesmata
Plasmodesmata are specialized intercellular channels connecting the cytoplasm of adjacent plant cells. Found mainly in plants, they are thought to aid in the movement of molecules, such as proteins, carbohydrates, and lipids, between cells. This process, known as symplasmic communication, is vital for cellular communication and the functioning of multicellular organisms. Plasmodesmata play a major role in the regulation of growth and development in plants, as well as in other physiological processes such as photosynthesis, nutrient transport, and hormone signaling. In addition, they may be involved in the response to environmental stimuli, such as drought, heat, and salinity. As such, they are important components of plant immunity and serve as gateways for plant defense mechanisms against pathogens.
