Phytosterols

Phytosterols are plant-derived compounds that are chemically similar to cholesterol but have different effects in the body. They are found in many foods, including fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds and whole grains. When consumed as part of a healthful diet, phytosterols are believed to help reduce total and LDL cholesterol levels, decrease inflammation and improve immune system function. They may also aid in the prevention of certain types of cancer, heart disease, and even some cognitive decline. As a result, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved the use of phytosterols as an ingredient in functional foods and dietary supplements. A diet rich in phytosterols can have numerous health benefits, and thus they are an important component of overall health and wellness.
