Opisthorchis
viverrini Opisthorchis viverrini (OV) is a type of parasitic worm that lives in the liver, gallbladder, and bile ducts of humans. It is a cause of significant health problems in countries of Southeast Asia, where it is most commonly found. OV infection can lead to severe liver damage, inflammation, and an increased risk of developing bile duct cancer. Therefore, accurate diagnosis and treatment of OV infection is extremely important in these areas. Treatment typically involves a combination of drugs, anthelmintic drugs, and preventive measures such as improved hygiene, sanitation, and the treatment of water sources. OV infection is also a serious concern for seafood consumers worldwide, as the parasite can be transmitted through eating undercooked freshwater fish.
