Haemoproteus

Haemoproteus is a genus of parasitic protozoa, belonging to the family Haemoproteidae, that infects the blood cells of birds and other animals. It is one of the most common avian parasites and is of significance for veterinarians, researchers and bird enthusiasts. Haemoproteus can cause anemia, weakness, hypertension and jaundice in the affected animal. In humans, the disease it causes is known as avian malaria. Treatment includes anti-parasitic drugs and supportive care. Haemoproteus, therefore, has a significant impact on the health of avian species and on bird populations, which is why it is of great importance to understand and diagnose this disease.
