Dientamoeba Fragilis
Dientamoeba fragilis is a single-celled protozoan parasite that can cause gastrointestinal illness in humans. It is one of the most common causes of diarrhea but can also cause other symptoms such as abdominal cramping, nausea, gas, and bloating. Although it is not considered a life-threatening infection, it can lead to serious complications and can be a source of irritation. Treatment is available but it may take multiple courses and/or lifestyle modifications to fight the infection. Prevention measures are the best way to avoid the spread of Dientamoeba fragilis and include proper handwashing, avoiding contact with infected individuals, and drinking bottled water in areas where the parasite is endemic. Knowledge of this parasitic infection is important as it may be misdiagnosed or missed as a cause of gastrointestinal illness.
