Blastocystis

Blastocystis is a genus of protozoan parasites. These parasites can colonize the intestines of humans and animals and are found in the gastrointestinal tracts of hosts in a variety of environments. The prevalence of Blastocystis infections varies in different geographic regions and is estimated to be 20-50% of the global population. Symptoms of Blastocystis infection range from mild to severe and include abdominal pain, bloating, constipation, diarrhea, and nausea. Diagnosis of Blastocystis is generally done through a stool test, and treatment consists of medications and lifestyle modifications. In addition, measures to improve personal hygiene, enhance sanitation, and prevent food and water contamination can help decrease the risk of acquiring an infection. As such, Blastocystis is an important cause of gastrointestinal symptoms in humans and animals and is associated with considerable morbidity and economic losses, and thus, proper diagnosis and treatment are essential for controlling this infection.
