Fluoroquinolones

Fluoroquinolones are a group of antibiotics used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections. They work by inhibiting enzymes in bacteria that are necessary for their growth and survival. They have the advantage of being active against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria and they have activity against a range of organisms that are resistant to other classes of antibiotics. Their broad-spectrum activity is particularly beneficial for treatment of infections in patients with compromised immune systems or those who have difficulty in taking multiple medications for multiple infections. Fluoroquinolones can also be used as a first-line antimicrobial therapy for uncomplicated infections. They are an important tool for management of both community-acquired and healthcare-associated infections.
